Illustration: Inner Beings Series (2019)

Inner Beings is an ongoing personal illustration project. My goal is to capture recurring thoughts and feelings, while quickly experimenting with a lot of different styles, techniques, media and/or software.

Selected works:

 Painting: The Arrival (2018)

The Arrival, oil on canvas, 30" x 20", 2018.

Process

This painting was done using the glazing method: one color at a time, I built thin, translucent layers onto the canvas; then finished with white color fine details.

It Happened Here is a location-based interactive app for users to learn and write about local history. I came up with this project idea as I had always been amazed by the beauty of old buildings in San Francisco, and wondered about the stories behind them.

As a map enthusiast, I definitely learned to work with maps from this project: detecting users' current location, geocoding (turning addresses into latitude and longitude) and reverse geocoding (getting name of places from its coordinates), populating data onto a map and visualizing them as pins, as well as customizing the visual design of a map.

Technologies used: Ruby on Rails, along with AJAX, Google Maps, jQuery and PostgreSQL.

A feature piece produced for South China Morning Post, published in August 2015. All illustrations were first sketched by hand then colored on Photoshop and organized on InDesign.
Self-portrait done in 2015.
Solely made with Illustrator.
I attempted to build the image with geometric shapes only. The picture here shows how circles were used in this work.

Business cards and identity design for Piron Asset Allocation Management Limited, 2014.

Its logo shows a pie chart representing asset allocation, and an up-pointing arrow representing 銳 (sharpness) in the company's Chinese name. It also indicates optimistic investment prospects.
The combination of up-pointing triangles on the front side also resembles a line graph trending upward, which signifies growing wealth.

Map illustration project for NearBuy, 2014.

NearBuy is a free map distributed in selected hotels in Hong Kong, showing tourists attractions within walking distance.
This piece introduced several famous architectures in Wan Chai district.
All buildings in this piece are hand-drawn then later colored on computer.

Business cards I designed for my online smartphone accessories store, Cookie Goodies, 2014.

Here I took a minimalist approach to keep the main products stand out.
